10 Years at View

Today marks my 10-year anniversary with View, but in a lot of ways it feels like day one. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved so far, and I’m even more excited about our future.

Looking back, we started with a simple idea: transform a day-to-day object, the window, to create delightful building environments that improve the health and wellness of the people inside. Along the way we’ve solved extremely difficult materials science and engineering challenges, developed the digital control system, software and apps, built and scaled the most advanced dynamic glass factory in the world, and created a new market category. We are also helping transform real estate, an extremely risk-averse industry, by challenging long held assumptions.

Those efforts have helped us progress from a postage stamp-size electrochromic device in 2008 to View being installed in over 35 million square feet today, with hundreds of thousands of people experiencing better environments every day. On the road to get here we’ve had a lot of success and faced many challenges. This journey has only been possible because of the amazing team at View. They have the intelligence and grit to do what needs to be done and the pride in seeing it completed. I am grateful every day to work with them.

But change is constant, and great companies don’t stand still. In the future, we will aggressively expand our delivery of game changing health and wellness outcomes and energy saving benefits of View while also working on a series of AI-rich applications for smart buildings that take those benefits to the next level.

That future is already here. View SmartProtectTM, the first of several IoT solutions that make buildings healthier, smarter and more productive was released last month.

With the journey already underway, today we see it fitting to announce the evolution of our brand from viewglass.com to view.com, which better reflects our transformation from a dynamic glass supplier to a company creating delightful human environments that are more intelligent, connected and personalized than ever before.

On behalf of all the talented and committed employees at View, welcome to day one of the future.

View Dynamic Glass - Re-inventing the occupant experience with predictive intelligence

At View, our vision is based around the science that natural light is required to live a healthy and productive life. For too long, people have been living with problems like heat and glare while missing out on things our bodies and minds crave — natural light and beautiful views.

View Dynamic Glass windows let in the optimal amount of natural light and preserve views, while blocking unwanted glare and heat, enhancing mental and physical wellbeing by significantly reducing headaches, eyestrain and drowsiness. In addition, controlling heat and glare also improves the energy efficiency of buildings up to 20%.

A smart window is only as smart as its control system. For maximum occupant comfort, windows need to be at the right tint at all times without requiring manual intervention. That is why, in 2012, View invented the first and only predictive control for dynamic glass, View Intelligence®. With Intelligence, your windows respond predictively with no occupant intervention, meaning occupants enjoy the views and daylight without lifting a finger.

In our quest to improve occupant delight, we are proud to announce the most significant update ever to Intelligence. This third generation of Intelligence includes key advances in cloud detection, prediction of reflections from surrounding buildings, and external obstruction modelling. The result: even more daylight and views for indoor spaces, while continuing to minimize glare and thermal discomfort. Occupants will be healthier, happier and more productive than ever.

In addition, we have made several improvements to the user interface, providing occupants more intuitive capabilities to personalize spaces to their own unique needs. This includes new mobile apps for Android and Apple iOS, a new web interface, and the View Touch Display, a wall mounted user interface.

We spend 90% of our time in buildings, and View is on a mission to make that time better. With this new release of Intelligence, our focus on occupant delight has never been so clear. Providing better predictive intelligence and increasing user control and customization makes a delightful space even more delightful.

The next big thing in building occupant experience is here.

View welcomes aviation experts Andy Kuchel and Kristi Crase to the team

View would like to welcome Andy Kuchel and Kristi Crase to the team. The dynamic duo has a depth of knowledge and years of experience in the aviation sector - one of View’s fastest-growing markets.

Andy will lead View’s overall Aviation strategy as VP, Aviation, backed up by Kristi as Strategy Director. Both are formerly with Quantum Secure, part of HID Global, where they led the aviation strategy to define and evangelize an identity based security solution category for airports.

“I’m looking forward to working with every airport to create first-class passenger experiences,” said Kuchel. “View Dynamic Glass reduces glare and unwanted heat within the terminal, providing a more comfortable environment for passengers and airport employees while also enabling airports to reduce their carbon footprint.”

Their arrival comes at a time when a large and growing list of leading airports are rapidly adopting dynamic glass and setting a new standard in delightful passenger environments.

In June, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) announced they would install up to 500,000 square feet of smart windows in DFW’s passenger terminals. This came after a study at DFW’s Gate A28 and a nearby restaurant showed that View Dynamic Glass significantly improved passenger comfort over conventional glass, resulting in an 83 percent increase in passenger dwell time at preferred gate seating and a 102 percent increase in concession sales.

View has installed dynamic glass at several airports including Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT), San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).

Come introduce yourself to Andy and Kristi at View’s ACI-NA Booth #1531 in Nashville, TN.

Life @ View - Summer Interns Contribute to Future of Dynamic Glass

With summer coming to an end, and back-to-school approaching, the View team would like to thank all our interns for their hard work, fresh thinking, and dedication over the past few weeks. We had the pleasure of working with a talented group of individuals who contributed to both the present-day and next generation of innovation from View.

The interns gained real world work experience by being assigned a project with support from their manager and mentors. They were encouraged to challenge the status quo and put forward new ideas - all while learning and living our corporate culture and mission of creating delightful human environments.

Irfan Sattar, who is attending Ohlone College, and Nikhil Trivedi, a mechanical engineering major from Santa Clara University worked on next generation user experience for the View control network which allows for customized and flexible grouping of individual windows, groups of windows, or even an entire façade.

Intern Showcase: Naveen Mirapuri, Engineering Intern

“The part of the internship that I found most unique and helpful was its fast-paced onboarding process!” said Nikhil Trivedi. “There was no sugar coating to what you were brought on to help with and I believe this challenged me to be at my best from the very start! I am hoping to learn and absorb as much information from management and other employees to steer me in the right direction for my future.”

“Working at View certainly pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to gain invaluable training and skills that I would never learn in the classroom,” said Irfan Sattar. “I am extremely grateful that I was given the opportunity to mentored by the industry experts.”

Intern Showcase: Anna Chow, Engineering Intern

Ripley Lyster, an engineering intern from Carnegie Mellon, worked on API integration that will streamline hardware testing and improve scalability. He said, “I’ve enjoyed working at View because the company is so driven. Everyone in the company is willing to do anything for the greater good of their customer. It’s a very inspiring environment that motivated me to work and contribute to the continued success at View Dynamic Glass.”

Martial Mendenhall, an intern from Sierra College has spent most of the last few weeks on the road visiting customers with View’s Field Service Engineering (FSE) team. “To see a hot bright building go to a cool comfortable and relaxing place to be, without furniture or light fixtures or even AC is mind-blowing! Every time I work with View Dynamic Glass I feel like I find out something new that it can do or notice something interesting that I never noticed before!” said Mendenhall.

Intern Showcase: Nikhil Trivedi, Engineering Intern

In other projects, Nikhil Parmar from University of Illinois at Urbana Campaign and Suraj Shah from Ohlone College, joined the New Product Initiatives team to develop tools to ensure smart windows are functioning optimally and measure progress of installations.

Alex Sikand, a computer science major from Boston University worked on building energy and cost analysis too to enable sustainable design solutions.

And to keep all the interns and their projects on task, Naveen Mirapuri, an engineering intern from The Harker School, developed a workflow tool for interns to communicate with mentors and track both progress and roadblocks. He said, “Interning at View Dynamic Glass pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to learn invaluable skills that I did not learn in the classroom and will now take with me for the rest of my career. I was given exciting tasks and responsibilities that immediately integrated me as a part of the engineering team.”

Summer Interns with Rao Mulpuri, View CEO

The internship program plays a big role in View’s learning orientated culture. We believe change is constant and we’re always looking for new ways to innovate and lead.

This year’s program hosted 28 interns across our Milpitas, CA, Washington D.C. and Olive Branch, MS locations. Schools represented included Carnegie Mellon University, The Harker School, Santa Clara University, Boston University, San Jose State University, Ohlone College, University of Illinois, Sacred Heart Atherton (HS), Irvington High School, Sierra College, Drake University, University of San Francisco, Georgetown University, Musician Institute, University of Mississippi, University of Memphis, Kansas State University, Auburn University, University of California, Irvine and Brigham Young University.

A sincere thank-you to all our interns for your hard work this summer. We loved having you here and wish the best for your return to school and in any future endeavors!

View Dynamic Glass Chosen for Charlotte Douglas International Airport Expansion

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has joined a large and growing list of leading airports rapidly adopting dynamic glass and setting a new standard in delightful passenger environments.

View Dynamic Glass is featured in the airport’s Concourse A Expansion – Phase I opening in July. The nine-gate, 229,807-square foot addition will house United, Southwest, JetBlue, Frontier and Air Canada airlines.

“This is a state of the art facility,” said Aviation Director/CEO Brent Cagle. “We are thrilled with the outcome. It sets the stage for what Charlotte Douglas International Airport has in store once concourse renovations are complete.”

Aesthetically, passengers will take notice of the wide open and spacious feel of the addition that is 30 feet wider than CLT’s existing concourses, as well as the high ceilings - all surrounded by View Dynamic Glass.

View Dynamic Glass reduces glare and unwanted heat within the terminal, providing a more comfortable environment for passengers and airport employees while also enabling CLT to reduce their carbon footprint.

“Concourse A Expansion – Phase I provides passengers a premier traveling experience,” Cagle added. “We’re really proud of the expansion,” Cagle said. “Our passengers are going to be delighted by the outcome.”

CLT’s adoption of dynamic glass builds upon its vision of embracing leading technologies to better serve its passengers, business partners, and the environment.

View Dynamic Glass has been installed at several airports to date, including Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).
