View Earns Healthcare Design Award
View Dynamic Glass has added another award to its mantle: the Silver Nightingale Award.
The Nightingale Awards, the industry’s only awards program for interior healthcare products that contribute to healing through product design and innovation, recognized View Dynamic Glass’ contributions to the healthcare built environment in the Architectural Products: Non-Clinical category.
Jurors selected 19 product winners from hundreds of exhibitors’ booths at the Healthcare Design Conference in San Diego, so we are delighted that View was able to make an impression in such a crowded field.
Among the many applications of View Dynamic Glass, healthcare is arguably the most significant, which is why we’re greatly honored by this distinction. The award is named after Florence Nightingale, a celebrated British reformer of hospitals in the 1800s whose mission still inspires us today.
As we all know, a hospital visit is rarely a welcome occasion, and traditionally the interior environment has done little to make that experience better. While research has indicated that views of the outdoors promote faster healing and natural daylighting can increase staff satisfaction, large window areas often create excess heat and glare, driving up energy costs. Hospitals have previously tackled this problem through complex shading structures, such as motorized blind systems, but technologies like View Dynamic Glass offer a new building skin to enhance the hospital experience and improve patient and staff wellness.
One of the judging criteria for the Nightingale Award is the product’s contribution to a healing environment. By providing uninterrupted views, enabling more natural light and rejecting glare and heat, View Dynamic Glass has helped hospitals and health centers throughout North America boost the mood for guests and patients. Our fast-growing healthcare portfolio includes the H. Marcus Radin Conference Center; the Methodist Olive Branch Hospital in Mississippi; and the Humber River Hospital in Toronto, Canada, set to open in fall of this year.
We believe View Dynamic Glass should be the center of any patient-focused healthcare building design, and this award validates that opinion.
Be sure to check out the January/February issue of Contract for the full list of Nightingale winners.

View is contributing to the evolution of the modern building – transforming it from a dormant structure to a living space that delivers vitality to those inside. Our glass delivers an experience that is highly functional and emotionally stunning in its simplicity.
View Dynamic Glass is now installed in over 100 locations. Check out the videos below which show how it has transformed the experience of people in a museum and office.
Helmerich Center for American Research
Tulsa, OK
The University of Tulsa’s Helmerich Center for American Research houses 100,000 rare books, documents, maps and unpublished works. The halls are adorned with unique art in the early American, Native American, and Mexican style. View Dynamic Glass makes the space more comfortable for visitors and protects the artwork from sun damage. View participated in the Center’s Opening Ceremony in the Fall.
DPR Construction
San Francisco, CA
View Glass plays a key role in DPR’s mission to maintain a net zero building, meaning it consumes no more than the amount of energy it creates. View Glass helps control light and heat gain in the the renovated building, contributing to the energy efficiency required to obtain a net zero energy profile. The typical energy bill of a building this size is $1,800 per month, DPR pays only $19.55.
Here at View, we believe in reconnecting buildings with their surroundings and embracing the rejuvenating effect of natural light. These projects are just a couple of examples of what can be created. We can’t wait to show you more.

View Selected for GSA's Green Proving Ground Program
We’ve been big fans of GSA’s Green Proving Ground (GPG) program since it launched four years ago. For the unfamiliar, this program, which is supported by the U.S. General Services Administration, promotes the most sustainable building technologies for the built environment. Each year, it selects an exclusive group of innovative technologies to undergo real-world evaluations in federal buildings across the U.S in order to assess their potential to reduce resource consumption and improve building performance. While it is a great idea for the development of best practices for the market, the motivator for this program is in GSA’s own interests — they own or lease over 380 million square feet of buildings in the U.S. The best building technologies will benefit both their mission and their bottom line.
As you can imagine, we were thrilled when View Dynamic Glass was selected to be part of this year’s GPG program in the building envelope category. View is just one of nine technologies selected for evaluation by GPG out of hundreds of applicants, so we are truly honored to be in such exclusive company. Another thing to hang our hat on — the installation of View Dynamic Glass will be the largest installation of electrochromic glass in the history of the GPG program.
The thrust of the evaluation will be a pilot installation of View Dynamic Glass in a federally owned building in Portland, Oregon. Although it was built in the 1960s, the Portland building is an example of GSA’s leadership in sustainable practice, having already achieved LEED Platinum and Energy Star 98 certification through building operations. View Dynamic Glass will shape the latest transformation of the building. Installation will cover both their traditional layout of perimeter offices with core cubicles and their office of the 21st century, which centers on flexible, collaborative spaces with ample daylight and glare control.
GPG has commissioned the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to perform the measurement and verification of View Dynamic Glass in this installation. Beyond energy savings, the comfort and productivity benefits for the occupants will also be measured. After being put through the rigors of testing, GPG will use the findings from this evaluation to potentially recommend deployment for View Dynamic Glass in GSA’s extensive portfolio and the U.S. commercial real estate market. This recommendation would be a huge boost in accelerating mainstream adoption of View Dynamic Glass.
Stay tuned for more updates on our progress in Portland. Installation begins early next year with findings to be reported in late 2015.

View Wins Product Innovation Award
Our team has been working diligently to create a modern solution for windows that provides increased architectural freedom, energy efficiency, and general wellness. We are happy to share that our ongoing efforts to bring smart glass into the mainstream were recognized in last month’s issue of Architectural Products magazine. Top industry professionals selected View Dynamic Glass as a 2014 Product Innovation Award (PIA) winner in the “Glazing and Openings” category.
We’re excited to see continued industry validation of View Dynamic Glass. It also was recognized as a technologically advanced and energy-efficient product in the U.S. Green Building Council’s first annual Best of Buildings Awards earlier this year.
Since our first installation in 2012 at the W hotel in San Francisco, we’ve engaged in over 145 projects in North America with applications across education, hospitality, healthcare, and the workplace. Organizations such as SAP, Hilton Hotels, NASA, Kaiser Permanente, CenturyLink and Southern Methodist University have incorporated View Dynamic Glass into their building designs.
We are honored to receive this award and look forward to many more exciting projects.
Click here for details about the award on page 76 of the November online issue of Architectural Products magazine.

The Start of Something New
We are thrilled to be breaking ground here, and anticipate this becoming the home for a wide range of insightful posts, from the latest View developments to trends in architecture, design and technology.
The world of architecture and design is undergoing rapid change thanks to innovations and technologies that are transforming the building from a dormant structure into a living thing.
We’re quickly moving into new standards for intelligent building, and View Smart Windows are part of a new class of smart technologies enabling this rapid evolution.
While the concept of smart windows has been in incubation for half a century, we are executing the first large-scale commercialization of this game-changing technology. We are confident that the thoughtful approach we are taking, combined with state-of-the-art product development and the ability to scale our manufacturing with many options, will at last bring smart windows to the mainstream.
With each project we finish, we see the powerful change we make in elevating the experience for people inside of buildings as well as the performance of the buildings themselves. We are driven to bring all that View Smart Windows offer – the reduced carbon footprint, the greater architectural freedom, the enhanced wellbeing of people and much more – throughout North America and the world.
With approximately 25 billion square feet of architectural glass installed each year, we have a massive opportunity before us. Stay tuned and come back often to see the progress we’re making.
This will be your window into our world. Thanks for taking a look.
