Spring is here, and Arkadia DVD is celebrating with the release of a pair of new additions to the Ad Lib Series of jazz performance DVDs, this time featuring blues legends Jimmy Witherspoon and Linda Hopkins.
The Ad Lib Series is a collection of 46 concert TV programs presenting the best jazz, pop and blues artists showcasing their skills with a jazz flair. Seen on TV internationally, Ad Lib (filmed in 1980) was the first musical television series recorded in Stereo.

Both titles will be released Tuesday, April 14th, 2009.

Jimmy Witherspoon:
Goin' Down Blues

Blues legend and Arkansas native Jimmy 'Spoon' Witherspoon (1920-1997) was one of the premiere Blues musicians of the post-WWII era. He became a member of Jay McShann's band with T-Bone Walker and Big Joe Turner, during which time they recorded "Ain't Nobody's Business," which became a massive hit and his signature song. He had numerous other hits including "Big Fine Girl," and "Times Gettin' Tougher Than Tough," which exemplified his musical style as a "blues shouter." Witherspoon's authentic and honest songs, and emotional vocal styling, propelled him from his humble beginnings into a genuine musical icon.

"Jimmy Witherspoon is a big, burly blues singer with a big, burly voice that matches his stature."
- John S. Wilson, New York Times

Linda Hopkins:
Deep In The Night

Linda Hopkins fell in love with Blues music after seeing Bessie Smith perform, later noting that whether you were moved by God or life, the singing came from the soul. Hopkins starred in Broadway musicals such as Jazz Train, celebrating African-American music, Black and Blue, a tribute to Harlem's Cotton Club, and Inner City, for which she won a Tony Award. Her one-woman show, entitled Me and Bessie, was performed in honor of her idol Bessie Smith. With a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Hopkins has been recognized as one of the premiere voices of her generation despite never receiving the household name-recognition worthy of one of the world's great talents.

"Linda Hopkins was born to be an entertainer... She comes alive on stage, her smile and spirit infectious as she rouses her audience to join her on this blues journey. She's simply sensational." - Myrna Daniels, LA Jazz Scene
