Willie Bobo:
King Conga

Raised in Spanish Harlem, William “Bobo” Correa (1934–1983) was one of the world’s premiere Jazz & Latin percussionists, most recognized for playing Afro-Cuban Jazz. Bobo joined Tito Puente’s band at the age of 19 and also played as a sideman for Dizzy Gillespie, but was given his first mainstream exposure after
playing on the George Shearing album The Shearing Spell. Bobo later joined Cal Tjader’s Modern Mambo Quintet, before relocating to LA to work with Latin Rock icon Carlos Santana. One of the most influential infusers of Latin, Jazz, Rock and Popular music, Bobo described his unique blend of musical styles as “the sound a Latin cat in Harlem would dig.” However, Bobo’s artistry not only contributed to the evolution of music, but left a legacy that reaches far beyond his home neighborhood.

Her impressive live act showcases the full spectrum of her unique amalgamation of genres; all while remaining distinctly and proudly Brazilian. Since her early days, the fiercely independent singer, composer, pianist, and band leader found unique ways to intersperse her native Brazilian music & rhythms with Latin syncopation and the extemporaneous disposition of American Jazz.
