Featuring Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Quincy Jones, Norman Granz, Ray Brown, Herb Ellis, and many more.
This comprehensive DVD documentary film tells the life story of one of Jazz's all-time great pianists, Oscar Peterson; a technical virtuoso and master of swing whose life has been shaped by his own extraordinary talent and driving ambition. We witness the triumphant musical renaissance of the Oscar Peterson Trio: Oscar Peterson, bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis together again after two decades, and we hear firsthand accounts of Oscar's clashes with racism, further complicated by prejudices confronting his racially mixed trio.
Maintaining Olympian musical standards in the face of life on the road left Peterson torn between his commitments to his family and to his art. One focus of this revealing documentary is the Peterson family reunion: A child of four meets his 67 year-old grandfather for the first time; and Oscar's grown children begin to express their feelings for their proud and articulate dad.
Vintage and contemporary performances, archival footage and intimate interviews with the man himself and a cast of jazz greats create this historic biography of the man who made the music and the times that made the man.
"Peterson's dazzling piano playing made him one of the major stars in jazz history” - New York Times
“...a giant of jazz piano whose virtuoso technique and impeccable sense of swing made him one of the most popular figures in the genre for more than half a century…It is a mark of Mr. Peterson's own prowess that Tatum once told him, "After me, you're next”” – Boston Globe
“Oscar Peterson plays the best ivory box I’ve ever heard.” – Count Basie
“...maharajah of the keyboard.” – Duke Ellington
