Damita Jo was envied for her charming persona, eclectic performances, breathtaking beauty, and her magnificent voice. She became famous with the hit record "I Went To Your Wedding". The seminal works of her career were two famed "response" songs. The first, "I'll Save the Last Dance for You" (a reply to the Drifters' "Save the Last Dance for Me"), exploded onto the Billboard R&B chart. The second, "I'll Be There" (an answer to the Ben E. King classic "Stand By Me"), dominated the radio waves and the Billboard Pop chart. The consummate entertainer, Jo started to incorporate comedy into her act, even touring with Redd Foxx. Despite having shared the stage with incomparable musicians such as Ray Charles, Count Basie and Joey Bishop, in the 1980s Damita switched to gospel music for the remainder of her career.
“Damita Jo doesn't sound like anyone but herself.
She invites an audience to listen because of her sheer
artistic ability whether she's belting out a tune or
pouring into a ballad. A most talented singer.”
- Jet Magazine
