Benny Golson
HTML clipboard
Virtuoso saxophonist and renowned composer Benny Golson gives full
expression to the refined poetic temperament and matchless musical
intelligence, which have made him a living jazz legend. Raised with an
impeccable musical pedigree, Golson has played in the bands of world famous
Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Earl Bostic and Art Blakey
and co-led the legendary Jazztet with fellow legends Art Farmer and Curtis
Fuller. Few jazz musicians can claim to be true innovators and even fewer
can boast of a performing and recording career that literally redefines the
term "jazz". Benny Golson has made major contributions to the world of jazz
with such jazz standards as: "Killer Joe," "I Remember Clifford," "Along
Came Betty," "Stablemates," "Whisper Not," "Blues March," "Five Spot After
Dark," and "Are you Real?" amongst countless others.
While living in Hollywood,
Benny wrote scores and
themes for, among other things, M*A*S*H, Mission Impossible, Room 222,
The Partridge Family,
|
Mannix, and It
Takes A Thief, as well as dozens of melodies for television commercials.
He also did arrangements for Lou Rawls, Eartha Kitt, Connie Francis, Ella
Fitzgerald, Eric Burdon, Nancy Wilson, Sammy Davis Jr. and Diana Ross, to
name a few.
Benny made his initial recording for Arkadia in 1996,
and as of today his Arkadia releases number six, including his stunning 2001
release One Day, Forever, which marked Benny's collaboration
with the legendary Shirley Horn on the title track and the debut of his
classical piano composition "On Gossamer Wings", performed by
pianist Lara Downes.
In 2007, Arkadia released a beautiful CD compilation
called The Many Moods of Benny Golson which features four
previously unreleased performances, and the DVD The Whisper Not Tour,
recorded live at Jazz Fest Berlin and featuring Art Farmer, Curtis Fuller,
Geoff Keezer, Dwayne Burno, Joe Farnsworth and special guest vocalist Jon
Hendricks. It was
released in conjunction with a compilation CD called The Many Moods of
Benny Golson, which showcases the highlights of Benny's output on
Arkadia and features four previously unreleased tracks.
