1.  Three Grammy® nominations for Arkadia Jazz

On January 6th it was announced that three Arkadia Jazz artists were nominated for Grammy® Awards in the Best Jazz Instrumental Solo category (Category 42). The Nominees are:

In only its second full year of operation Arkadia Jazz has garnered three Grammy® nominations (the most of any independent label in the jazz category) and a second consecutive nomination for Independent Jazz Record Label of the year by the Gavin Report. Thanks for your support and recognition.


2.  Benny Golson — Live chat on TWEC.COM!

Thursday, February 18th, at 9pm Benny Golson will be the subject of an online chat on Transworld Entertainment’s website: http://www.twec.com.  (Transworld operates almost 1000 music retail outlets under the names of Coconuts, Strawberries, Camelot and Record Town.)  To participate in the chat go directly to http://chat.twec.com.  This has been a great time for Benny Golson, as his Grammy ® nomination this year for Body & Soul on Tenor Legacy is Benny’s first as a player.   Benny’s last Grammy® nomination came in the form of a Best Pop Song nomination in 1958.“”

3.   Billy Taylor – Up to #4 on the Gavin Radio charts

At radio, Billy Taylor has re-entered the top 10 on the Gavin Jazz Radio Charts with his latest release and acclaimed solo album Ten Fingers, One Voice.  As of this week Ten Fingers is in it’s second straight week on the Gavin Jazz top 10 at the #4 position.   Previously on Arkadia Jazz, the Billy Taylor Trio’s Music Keeps Us Young sat atop the Gavin Jazz charts at #1 for 4 consecutive weeks.   Thanks to everyone who continues to support Dr. Taylor on radio.

With the release of Ten Fingers, One Voice, his first solo album in over 50 years and another active touring schedule this winter, 1999 truly marks the springtime of Billy Taylor. Billy Taylor’s Jazz at The Kennedy Center continued into ’99 with the Billy Taylor Trio performing in January and February featuring guest artists Russell Malone and Ingrid Jensen in Washington, DC.  Additionally, as a special installment of the program, the Billy Taylor Trio was in Naples, FL, at the Philharmonic Center for the Arts with Art Farmer as Dr. Taylor’s special guest.

As a regular contributor to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Concerts and Lectures series in New York City, Billy Taylor is presenting the use of jazz vocals as an instrument.  The two latest installments of this series include the Billy Taylor Trio working with acclaimed vocalists Etta Jones and Kevin Mahogany.

Other recent activities for the Billy Taylor Trio include gigs in Opelika, AL, with Freddy Cole and Sarasota, FL, at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall with Joe Henderson.

4.  David Liebman – New Release with Pat Metheny, Billy Hart and Cecil McBee

With David Liebman’s newest release The Elements: Water about to impact at radio and Lieb’s first ever Grammy® nomination, things are really looking up for the master soprano saxophonist.  Rave reviews of Water have been pouring in from all over the globe and Lieb has been setting up touring engagements all over Europe and the U.S. with gigs in France and Germany as well as dates in NYC at the Blue Note and the Knitting Factory.  Stay tuned for a more extended Dave Liebman tour itinerary that will take Lieb through the Midwest and west coast United States.

David Liebman Group’s New Vista, the David Liebman Ensemble’s John Coltrane’s Meditations and David Liebman’s The Elements: Water with Pat Metheny, Cecil McBee and Billy Hart are all available now!


5.  Joanne Brackeen – New release in March

With the release of her long anticipated new album on Arkadia looming on the horizon, Joanne has taken to the road and announced an ambitious tour schedule.  Starting off in late January early February by staying local to NYC, Joanne played at the Shanghai Jazz Club in Madison, NJ, a special Jazz Highlights event in NYC followed by the East Coast Jazz Festival in the Washington, DC/MD area.  Soon after that she will be in Minneapolis, MN, with Eddie Gomez, back to NYC for an extended weekend at the Knickerbocker and then off to New England, upstate New York, and New Orleans.  Stay turned for more Joanne Brackeen tour dates as she will soon be announcing a month long tour of Europe with Greg Osby to begin later on in the spring.

6. David Lahm – New release in March

Arkadia Records is reintroducing acclaimed arranger/pianist/composer David Lahm to the forefront of the jazz scene!  For over two years Lahm has been recording, writing and producing Jazz Takes On Joni Mitchell with such renowned guest musicians as Randy Brecker, Lew Tabackin, Thomas Chapin, Kenny Washington, Mike LeDonne, Ron Vincent and over 15 other all-star musicians.

David Lahm and his all-star guests explore the world of jazz through the songs of Joni Mitchell, one of this country’s greatest musical talents.  Mitchell’s affinity for jazz has been apparent throughout her career, and now pianist David Lahm pays tribute to her in the idiom that has influenced her repertoire: jazz.  This recording represents a new kind of recognition for one of pop and folk-rock’s most endearing song sculptors.
