When the sizzling sounds of Brazil entered the mainstream of American music in the 1960s, Airto Moreira, the world’s foremost percussionist, was the leader. Together with his wife, vocalist Flora Purim, one of the most innovative voices in modern Jazz, this DVD, Airto & Flora Purim: The Latin Jazz All-Stars, presents a spectacular night of Latin inspired Jazz music featuring Jazz All-Stars such as Joe Farrell and Tony Moreno. Recorded live from the Queen Mary Jazz Festival, this live concert DVD is a rhythmic, vocal and visual delight…a foot-tapping experience to the sounds of Airto & Flora Purim, truly two of Latin America’s greatest & most influential artists.
Airto Moreira, the brilliantly original percussionist, composer and arranger, is responsible for the resurgence of percussion in Jazz and Pop music worldwide. Beginning his career in the local clubs of San Paulo, Airto went on to join the Quarteto Novo, which included the legendary Hermeto Pascoal. The group set the standard for a new progressive sound in Brazilian music… the mixing of fiery, passionate rhythms with soft chord changes. Since his relocation from his homeland to the U.S., Airto has displayed his total virtuosity playing a variety of exotic percussion instruments such as the berimbau and the Cuica to the world, and collaborated with such artists as Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderly, Weather Report, and Paul Simon.
Singer Flora Purim’s vocal range has allowed her ample opportunity to explore her unique talent. She became known in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil while singing the avant-garde sounds of Bossa Nova. After arriving in the U.S., she worked with Jazz greats such as Stan Getz, Gil Evans, and Chick Corea. Flora began to reevaluate traditional Pop / Jazz singing, shifting her voice from focusing on lyric to emphasizing the production of natural vocal sounds that allowed her to communicate with her audience more freely. Today, she has perfected a vocal style that is truly unique.
This special DVD, Airto & Flora Purim: The Latin Jazz All-Stars, not only serves as a living document of the unique collaboration between American Jazz and the Brazilian Rhythm, but as a testament to the skill of Airto Moreira and singer Flora Purim, two of the primary purveyors of this ambitious musical fusion.
