Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s classic opera, The Abduction from the Seraglio (Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail) is brought to life with this vibrant stage interpretation captured on film, staged and directed by the renowned Harry Kupfer and performed by the Dresden State Opera,

Wolfgang Mozart was barely 26 years of age when he composed The Abduction from the Seraglio, during one of the most contented periods of his ephemeral life. Very much in love with Constanze Weber, he named his opera’s heroine in honor of his beloved and married her just three weeks after the premiere.

Mozart’s adoration of Weber is unabashedly represented on the music of this opera DVD, which is considered some of his most renowned and vibrant. It includes one of the most famous coloratura soprano arias, “Martern aller arten (Torture me and flay me),” in which the heroine defies the Pasha’s advances despite certain torture and death for rejecting him.
Though considered an opera by modern standards, The Abduction from the Seraglio is more reminiscent of a Singspiel (a German-Viennese song-play, which utilizes the dramatic elements of a play while incorporating spirited songs similar to an operetta or musical) rather than a classic Italian opera.

THE PLOT:
18th Century Viennese Society was enamored by Turkish culture, fashion, culture, folklore, and even Turkish music. Both the narrative and music of this opera reflect this cultural fascination. The Abduction from the Seraglio is a comedy about Europeans in a Turkish Pasha’s harem, complete with the traditional male protagonist and tragic heroine complemented by comic relief provided by the supporting characters. The most memorable character in Mozart’s love inspired opera is Osmin, the Pashs’s overseer and one of the great comic figures in the history of Opera. Osmin is one of Mozart’s ingenious conceptions, a character as genuinely and consistently humorous in music as in action, but potentially as dangerous as he is hilarious.

Performed in the original German, this entertaining production is beautifully staged and perfectly sung by the Dresden State Opera, conducted by Peter Gulke. This exclusive Mozart classic on DVD celebrates the opera masterpiece’s triumphant originality.
