Michelangelo & The Sistine Chapel

Michelangelo's Masterpiece, painted on the domed ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City’s Apostolic Palace, is possibly the finest work of art of the Renaissance era, which spanned the 14th & 15th Centuries. In its transcendent beauty, the ceiling merges Art with Philosophy, Religion and the spirit of brilliance embodied by its creator- Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475 – 1564).

Michelangelo used bright colors, easily visible from the floor. On the lowest part of the ceiling he painted the ancestors of Christ. Above this he alternated male and female prophets, with Jonah over the altar. On the highest section Michelangelo painted nine stories from the Book of Genesis.

The Sistine Chapel ceiling represents the deepest essence of both the artist’s personal and religious expression. In the 9 panels that span the vast dome, Michelangelo depicts the cataclysmic events of the Bible’s book of Genesis - from the Creation of Earth, and Adam & Eve in the Garden of Eden, to the Sibyls and Prophets, and culminating in his vivid interpretation of the Apocalypse and the coming of Christ.
